La Salle Philadelphia students on Campus

  • 11  Nursing students  and Faculty in Mexico City for a Nursing Travel Study program
  • 10 day program covering current Health issues in Mexico as part of Clinical component of final semester.

Mexico City, March  15th 2013. Nursing students from La Salle University, Philadelphia had no idea of what to expect in Mexico City. They signed up, open minded and ready to participate in the first ever short term study tour available to Nursing students, hosted by Special Programs at La Salle Mexico City.

The program consisted of lectures related to health care in Mexico, site visits and cultural activities.

The lack of Spanish language skills did not limit these students as they participated in exercise classes  with residents of Casa Arturo Mundet,. Their professional  social  skills were put to test at the Centro de Salud de  Huixquilucan where they  held children  while staff administered vaccines,  observed a hysterectomy  in the small operating theatre and even  calmed a young mother-to-be,  who was in labor for the first time.

The overall experience in Mexico exceeded student expectations. Students state that the program  was an excellent opportunity to observe first hand different facilities, types of treatment and care and see the professionalism of Mexican health care workers.

Denise Kavanagh, Professor of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences stated that “the experience was a wonderful opportunity for students to compare what they observe during their clinicals  in Philadelphia with what they experienced in Mexico”. She is confident that this program will continue to be offered  and that more La Salle Nursing students can take advantage of this wonderful experience in the following years ahead.
